1. INTRODUCTION

The foundation of international human rights governance is provided by international conventions and treaties, which set minimum requirements to safeguard vulnerable populations including women and children. India’s dedication to maintaining these values, which are inextricably tied to its constitutional and legal framework, is demonstrated by its accession to important international agreements. The Indian Constitution offers a strong basis for incorporating duties under international treaties because of its principles of equality, nondiscrimination, and fundamental rights. Although progressive legal and policy reforms have been prompted by international treaties like the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), their impact on actual circumstances is still a complicated interaction of sociocultural, institutional, and systemic factors. The impact of international conventions and treaties on India’s legal and policy framework for women is critically examined in this chapter. It addresses issues and suggests solutions for successful implementation while examining legislative changes, policy advancements, and judicial actions motivated by these treaties.
