Abstract
Education is widely regarded as the single most powerful lever for altering the social, economic, and political position of women in India. This paper examines the historical trajectory, current status, and transformative potential of women’s education in India, drawing on census data, national family health survey findings, government policy documents, and recent scholarship. It argues that although India has narrowed the gender gap in literacy from roughly twenty-three percentage points in the mid-2000s to about thirteen points today (International Institute for Population Sciences [IIPS] & ICF, 2021), deep-seated structural barriers such as patriarchal social norms, child marriage, economic constraints, and rural-urban disparities continue to limit the transformative reach of education for women. The paper reviews policy interventions including the National Education Policy 2020, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, and the Gender Inclusion Fund, and situates regional case studies of Kerala, Bihar, and Maharashtra within a broader discussion of education as a catalyst for social change. It concludes with a set of policy recommendations for achieving substantive, rather than merely formal, gender equality in Indian education.

1. INTRODUCTION
Education has long been theorised as the foundation upon which equitable societies are built, and nowhere is this more evident than in the case of women’s education in India. As a fundamental right and a driver of human development, education shapes not only individual life chances but also the broader architecture of gender relations within families, communities, and the nation-state (International Journal of Research and Analytical Reviews [IJRAR], 2024). In a country as large and socially heterogeneous as India, the question of women’s education intersects with caste, class, religion, region, and rural-urban location, producing a landscape of uneven progress that resists simple narratives of either triumph or failure.
