1. Theme:
Exploring the theoretical underpinnings, applications, implementations, challenges, educational, and societal effects of value-based education in diverse contexts with an emphasis on raising morally upright, accountable, and socially conscious children and youth to be decent citizens.
2. Importance
In essence, value-based education (VBE) goes beyond academic knowledge to create well-rounded individuals with strong values like honesty, empathy, and respect, which are essential for both personal and societal well-being. It does this by fostering ethical character, encouraging responsible citizenship, and giving people a strong moral compass that empowers them to make moral decisions in life, resulting in a more peaceful and just society.
3. Need and Role of Educators
Students and youths’ values are perceived to be declining due to parental focus on academics, media exposure, busy schedules, peer pressure, lack of ethics in education, and technology influence. However, in a world where technology is advancing at a breakneck pace, one thing never goes out of style: the value of character. Therefore, value-based education (VBE) is crucial in today’s society, as it promotes holistic learning and emotional and moral growth. Educators play a significant role in VBE by integrating values into teaching, fostering open dialogue, critical thinking, and a positive classroom climate. They collaborate with parents and the community, assess value development, and help students make informed decisions, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment. Additionally, it is made plain in India’s National Education Policy 2020 that “value education” is an essential part of a curriculum that is focused on the needs of the students. Schools and other higher education institutions have therefore, rapidly grasped the necessity, significance, and evolving role of VBE in integrating it in their curricula in a number of ways.
