Abstract
The media functions as a powerful instrument in shaping public perception and cultural norms, yet its portrayal of women frequently perpetuates deeply entrenched patriarchal stereotypes and systemic biases. This paper presents a critical analysis of the intersection between media practices, legal regulations, and the representation of women in the public sphere. It examines how conventional and digital media platforms continue to objectify, marginalise, and misrepresent women, thereby impacting their socio-legal status and impeding gender equality. The study scrutinizes the efficacy of existing statutory frameworks, such as regulations on indecent representation, obscenity, and hate speech, highlighting the persistent tension between the constitutional right to freedom of expression and the protection of women’s dignity. Furthermore, the paper addresses the regulatory vacuum created by the rise of new media and artificial intelligence, which has accelerated the proliferation of deepfakes and algorithmic biases. By evaluating judicial precedents and regulatory enforcement mechanisms, this research identifies systemic gaps in the law that fail to hold media creators and digital intermediaries accountable. Ultimately, the paper argues for robust legislative reforms, co-regulatory media frameworks, and comprehensive gender-sensitization policies within media industries to ensure an ethical, accurate, and rights-respecting representation of women.

1. Introduction
Media plays an important role in shaping public attitudes about women. Films, television, newspapers, advertising, social media and digital platforms influence how society understands women’s identity, ability, and social status. Positive representation can challenge discrimination and highlight women’s achievements, while stereotypical or degrading representation may reinforce gender inequality, objectification and violence. In India, the relationship between media, law and women’s representation involves balancing freedom of expression with dignity, equality, privacy and public morality.
