Abstract

Teacher education in the 21st century is undergoing significant changes as technology becomes a key part of teaching and learning. This shift aims to enhance educational quality while also supporting teaching practices that align with the broader goals of sustainable development. As communities around the world face challenges like climate change, social inequality, digital gaps, and fast technological changes, teacher education needs to prepare educators to equip learners with the skills, attitudes, and values essential for a sustainable future.

Technology in teacher education creates unique opportunities for active, learner-centered approaches that promote critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving. Digital classrooms, online learning platforms, e-portfolios, and virtual simulations help both pre-service and in-service teachers connect subject knowledge to real-world sustainability issues. At the same time, these technological tools support inclusivity by narrowing the gaps between rural and urban areas, giving marginalized groups access to quality learning resources, and promoting fairness in education.

A key connection between teacher education, technology, and sustainable development is the development of lifelong, flexible learning systems. Blended learning models, digital peer networks, and global knowledge sharing allow teachers to regularly update their professional skills while also creating meaningful learning experiences for their students. This contributes directly to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which ensures inclusive and fair quality education while offering lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.

Keywords: Teacher education, educational technology, sustainable development, lifelong learning, inclusive education, digital pedagogy, global citizenship, Sustainable Development Goal 4, innovation in teaching, equity in education.

1. INTRODUCTION

The 21st century marks a significant change in education driven by two key forces: technology and sustainability. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), online learning, and open educational platforms, education has become more flexible, accessible, and interactive. At the same time, global issues like climate change, social inequality, and environmental damage require education that promotes ethical awareness and sustainable thinking.

Teacher education plays a crucial role in this change, forming the values and skills of the next generation. Teachers need training not only to use technology effectively but also to model sustainable and inclusive practices. SDG 4 stresses quality education and lifelong learning for all, aligning with modern teacher preparation. Thus, Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) must integrate sustainability and digital literacy into their curricula, teaching methods, and policies to create educators who are globally competent and adaptable.
